Sir: I thought it worthwhile to point out that Michael Portillo's claim that the Tory party enjoys the support of the 'quiet majority' (Letters, 27 April) echoes the claim that the late President Nixon once made to the support of the 'silent majority'.

I don't know if the echo is deliberate, but it serves the same tactical purpose: if you speak out against us, says Portillo, you are by definition voicing only a minority opinion and we are justified in ignoring you. In other words, the Tories are most likely to listen to you if you say nothing.

Yours faithfully,

MICHAEL FOSTER
