A N WILSON is quoted as claiming that the stable, the virgin birth, the star and the wise men are not to be found in the Bible (Sunday Review 'True Stories of Good and Evil', 20 September). Luke says Mary laid the child 'in a manger because there was no place in the inn' (Luke 2.7), Matthew writes 'before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit' (Matt 1.18); and also 'wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying 'Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East' ' (Matt 2.2).
