Sir: Congratulations to Thomas Sutcliffe on his devastating put-down of Camille Paglia, the 'high priestess of Utter Bunkum' (television review, 2 March). But he is too sanguine if he thinks she is unusual in universities.

It isn't only in America that you'll find salaried academics, carbon copies of this woman, paid to regale students with gems like: 'The penis is shaping up to be the central metaphor of the gender crisis of the Nineties.' Just look out (not at Oxford, I hasten to add) for new courses with names like 'Gender Studies' or 'Cultural and Media Studies'.

Yours faithfully,

RICHARD DAWKINS
