Letter: US interference in Cuba deserves condemnation

Sir: American policy on Cuba ('Clinton bars the Cuban boat people', 20 August) is as senseless as squeezing a tube of toothpaste and complaining that the contents are escaping.

President Clinton's accusation that Fidel Castro is deliberately permitting refugees to escape in a 'cold-blooded attempt to retain his grip on Cuba' must have been made while gazing into a distorting mirror.

The penalties employed by the US on any ship or country attempting to trade with Cuba would have America running with a scream of outrage to the United Nations if any country dared attempt those same tactics against the US.

Yours faithfully,

HAZEL RENNIE
