Letter: What was Trafalgar?

Sir: I was interested to note Professor David Birmingham's concern that naming a proposed bank holiday 'Trafalgar Day' would foster dangerous militaristic and patriotic attitudes (Letters, 6 May). Surely we should give more credit to our education system. I imagine that the vast majority of young people who will grow up with this holiday do not know what Trafalgar was, when it was or who was involved. This choice of name cannot therefore do any harm.

Yours faithfully,

T. P. GARRARD
