Letter: Woolly thinking about tea cosies

Sir: Your diarist (5 October) suggests that only an American would mistake a tea cosy for a woolly hat. Not so.

I once watched a new mother unwrap a present. 'Oh, how lovely]' said her very English mother-in-law, 'matching berets for you and the baby]'

The gift was, of course, a pair of knitted cosies - for teapot and egg cup.

Yours faithfully,

FRANCES MANSON
