Sir: A National Lottery advertisement recently published in the Independent read: "Discover the meaning of life" (these words being crossed out in red) "Forget it all for an instant £50,000."

I have just returned from Nepal, where the people I met constantly search for a deeper meaning of life. They genuinely believe in a slogan I saw on a school wall:-

If you lose your money, you lose nothing

If you lose your character, you lose everything.
