Sir: Today's article by Godfrey Hodgson ("US takes first prize for self- delusion", 6 August) presents a very misleading comparison between the relative performances of the United States and the nations of the European Union at the Atlanta Olympics.

Since a maximum of three competitors per country per event (for individuals) is permitted in each sport, the US is at a distinct disadvantage in comparison with the European Union. For example in an athletics final of eight competitors it is entirely possible for the EU to field five competitors as opposed to only three from the US.
