From Mr James Medd Sir: If Eric Cantona were a black African and if Matthew Simmons, who, according to your report ("Palace offer Frenchman no sympathy", 27 January) , said something along the lines of "you dirty French bastard, fuck off back home to France", had instead said "you dirty black bastard, fuck off home to Africa", would we not have been less indignant at Cantona's behaviour and more indignant at Simmons's?
