LETTERS: Art, subsidy and the politics of envy

From Mr Raphael Gonley Sir: Dennis Marks (Letters, 18 January) wonders what the point is of supporting experimental and multicultural companies if their role is not "to feed through into the programmes of the two major London opera companies".

This pyramidic view of arts organisations has nothing to do with art. Connections between companies should spring from a genuine dialogue based on artistic compatibility. There can be no universal edict about their role.

A Puccini opera, an Indian dance event or a community show based on a local issue are unlikely to have much to say to each other. If they do not connect, they are not thereby devalued.

Yours faithfully, Raphael Gonley London, SW19
