From Mr G. T. Brown Sir: With regard to your leading article "Ritual, the common thread of religion" (15 December), my first lesson at junior school was on the Bible and the subject was the 23rd Psalm. I believed in it from then, and have never questioned it since.

For me, daily prayers and hymns make the start of the school day enjoyable and I would not want this experience to be denied to anyone. My parents never went to church; it was the school that gave me the faith I still have at 75.

Yours faithfully, G. T. BROWN Kingston upon Thames, Surrey
