Sir: Robin Cook promises that "jobs will be the bottom line" in judging whether to take part in monetary union ("Cook backs off joining new currency at launch", 2 October).

Fortunately this will kill stone dead any risk of us entering the present single currency. A recent report from 50 Labour MPs highlighted the inevitability of massive job losses arising from EMU, due to the public expenditure cuts of up to pounds 18bn required to meet the convergence criteria on today's figures.
