IN REPLY to Donald Foreman's letter (15 October) on Malcolm Turnbull's article "She's your queen, not ours" (8 October), there is a failure to acknowledge that "our" Queen is also "head of state". And one responsibility of such an office is public support for the majority of citizens. This is not a political statement, but an expression of national unity.

The main reason for the pursuit of an Australian republic is to rid ourselves of such an antiquated impediment as colonial monarchy. The right of the people of Australia is to have a citizen of our own land as our head of state, to stand publicly and declare the beliefs of Australia on any international, and emotive, matter.
