THE caption to the illustration of Lewis Carroll's most celebrated scene was "The Mad Hatter's Tea Party". This is rather misleading. The tea party was held in the March Hare's house. Nor is there evidence that the Hatter was mad. Carroll described him throughout simply as "the Hatter".
