Imre Karacs's piece on rabies disregards the threat to people who encounter dogs in the course of their work ("Why aren't Germans all dead from rabies?", 20 October).
Six thousand postmen and postwomen were bitten and attacked by dogs last year. Simply because deaths are rare is no reason to lighten up on a law that has served these islands well.
There are seven million dogs in the UK. The Government record on animal diseases and infection is hardly reassuring.
