GEOFFREY Wheatcroft's article implies that the only effect of the bombing was the futile destruction of cities and the killing of non-combatants. A better authority might be Albert Speer, the German armaments minister, who wrote in prison in Spandau: 'The Allied bombing campaign was a true second front. It cost us the equivalent of 6,000 tanks and 10,000 field guns.'
