Letter: Our waste
Whether we like it or not, there is enough intermediate-level waste now to cover a football pitch to a depth of about 30 feet ("Sellafield N-dump will leak, say inspectors", 2 February).
We have benefited from the processes that produce this waste - electricity, defence, cancer treatments and research - and we should dispose of it responsibly. That is our task.
Both the Royal Society and the Radioactive Waste Management Advisory Committee have commented on the excellence of our scientific work. If we cannot show that Sellafield will be safe for radioactive waste disposal we will not seek to build a repository there.
