Letter: Pit stopped

Your article "Miner who cashed in at a chalk face" (Business, 29 September) states that Silverwood colliery was closed in 1987 leading to David Jones's redundancy. In fact, Silverwood remained open until 1994. It could be argued that it was the most unfortunate of the pits to be closed because of the privatisation of the industry, as even up to the announcement of its closure it was still breaking all its previous productivity records. Because of its relative proximity to the superpit of Maltby colliery, Silverwood was forced to close and was not put up for sale.
