WHEN T H HUXLEY heard of natural selection, he reportedly said: 'How very stupid not to have thought of that]' How much more stupid of Patrick Golding to describe evolution as 'incomprehensible' (Letters, 9 January) more than 100 years after its explanation was published]

Golding states that belief in Darwin's idea 'demands more faith than religion ever asks'. He is wrong: it demands only the faith that reason is more reliable than ignorance and prejudice.
