If David Elstein wishes to retain the audience that tuned into Channel 5 for the England v Poland football match, he will have to start producing programmes people want to watch ("Staying alive on Channel Dive", 1 June). Even with the negative consequences of Conservative broadcasting legislation, the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 are still among the best television services in the world. The mainstream television audience is therefore unaccustomed to cheaply made and uninspiring programming of the kind being offered by Mr Elstein.
