From The Rev Richard Schofield

Sir: Professor James Meade (Obituaries, 29 December) was my contemporary at Malvern College, a school of which some Oxford academics had never heard. Bullying was endemic and accepted by the headmaster as a means to manliness. Meade used to be tied up in a carpet.

Yours faithfully,

Richard Schofield
