Our heritage lost to the free market

Sir: As a member of English Heritage for the past three years, I have enjoyed supporting the upkeep of a number of sites, in particular a unique collection of prehistoric monuments along the Ridge Way in Wiltshire, from Silbury Hill to Wayland's Smithy and the White Horse at Uffington.

Peter Brooke, the heritage secretary, has now announced that a number of these 'category C sites' have 'no commercial value' and English Heritage will shed responsibility for them. On this basis, I find that my membership has 'no commercial value', as entrance to these sites is free, so I will cancel it.

Yours sincerely,

NIC EVANS
