THE political decision to privatise public utilities was certainly debatable, but it is important to recognise that the share options granted to the directors of the newly-privatised concerns would have had no value at the time the options were given.
The share prices of the shares under option rose sharply subsequently. This was largely a result of the surge in profitability of the companies, arising from a range of possible causes from the exploitation of monopoly advantage to greater efficiency.
