A good day for:

Spoon-benders, one of whom may now win $1m from the comfort of his own computer terminal. Uri Geller, who is reported to be looking for an heir, is offering that prize to anyone who can bend a spoon over the Internet. The spoon may be seen by calling up Geller's Worldwide Web page, which can be found at http://www.urigeller.com.

A bad day for:

Tony Dow, a Sheriff's deputy in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, USA, who admitted yesterday that he had made up a report of a "scruffy looking man" shooting him in the arm. The deputy had, in fact, been throwing his pistol in the air when it discharged and wounded him. The four-day man- hunt for the alleged assailant has been called off.
