Game of Thrones: Daenerys’ dragon Drogon flies away in finale of show

George RR Martin has publicly set a deadline to finish his long-awaited novel The Winds of Winter.

The author did so while responding to an appeal put out by Air New Zealand, which implored him to travel to the country to complete his manuscript.

In a one-minute clip released earlier this week, the airline pointed out that Martin is under more pressure than ever to deliver a satisfying book to his fans now that Game of Thrones, which is based on his A Song of Ice and Fire series, has concluded.

“How are you meant to be creative when you’re probably as nervous as a Stark with a wedding invite?” the video asks.

“Fortunately, we’ve got the perfect solution: an epic trip to New Zealand, on us.”

Martin responded to the appeal on his website, saying that while the “wonderfully generous” offer is tempting, a trip to New Zealand would only distract him from his work.

He suggested instead that the airline fly 20 to 30 “writers, fans, and artists” who can’t afford to travel there.

The author also pledged to finish The Winds of Winter by the next World Science Fiction Convention in Wellington, New Zealand, which is taking place from 29 July to 2 August, 2020.

“I tell you this — if I don’t have The Winds of Winter in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for Worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I’m done,” Martin wrote.

“Just so long as the acrid fumes do not screw up my old DOS word processor, I’ll be fine.”

Winds of Winter will be the first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series since its predecessor, A Dance with Dragons, was released in 2011.

A seventh book titled A Dream of Spring is also planned.
