Directed by JJ Abrams, Star Wars: Episode IX sees Rey (Daisy Ridley), Poe (Oscar Isaac), Finn (John Boyega) and the Resistance regrouping following heavy losses against the First Order and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in The Last Jedi.

Other returning characters include Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o), General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson), Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo).

Billy Dee Williams will also play Lando Calrissian once again, having last appeared as the smuggler in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Abrams has also confirmed that Ian McDiarmid will be back as the villain Palpatine.

Despite his character dying during The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill looks set to play Luke Skywalker once again. Unused scenes shot during The Force Awakens featuring Carrie Fisher, who died before the release of The Last Jedi, are set to be used in Episode IX.

Newcomers to the cast include Naomi Ackie, Oscar nominee Richard E Grant, Keri Russell, and Lord of the Rings actor Dominic Monaghan.

Star Wars: Episode IX reaches cinemas 20 December 2019.
