Elton John features in John Lewis Christmas advert for 2018

John Lewis have unleashed their 2018 Christmas advert, sending Elton John's chances for this year's Christmas number one spot rocketing.

The latest festive-themed advert from the department store features a retrospective of John's career, winning a rave review from The Independent.

Bookies have slashed the chance on the iconic singer's track "Your Song" taking this year's top spot, offering 4/1 odds.

While the advert will no doubt send the track flying up the charts, whether John can hold onto the number one spot for the next month remains to be seen.

Ellie Golding's cover of John's "Your Song", which sound-tracked a previous John Lewis advert, managed to peak at number two on the charts

Other songs that have featured on the advert include Gabrielle Aplin's cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "The Power Of Love" and Lily Allen's version of Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know".

While both of those tracks reached number one in the charts, neither could hold onto the spot long enough to be named Christmas number one.

Ariana Grande is currently the favourite to take this year's top spot with her track "Thank You, Next", which currently heads the UK charts.

The Fire Tones, comprising of over 40 firefighters from across the UK, have recorded a version of Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" which is also in contention.
