Mac Miller: Donald Glover and Chance the Rapper lead tributes to late rapper at memorial concert

Performers at the Los Angeles concert included John Mayer, Miguel and Travis Scott

The rap world united for a concert celebrating the life of late US rapper Mac Miller, who was found dead at the age of 26 in September.

Miller's passing led to an outpour of tributes from his friends and collaborators, many of whom gathered for the tribute concert in Los Angeles on Wednesday (31 October).

Anderson.Paak, Chance the Rapper and Travis Scott were among the attendees, as well as Action Bronson, John Mayer and J.I.D, Njomza who all performed. Other artists to pay tribute included Miguel, SZA and Vince Staples.

Videos of Miller as a child were shown to the crowd, all expressing how the platinum hip-hop star's passion for music began when he was a baby.

Leading the on-screen tributes were Pusha T, Pharrell Williams and Lil Wayne, with Donald Glover recording a message that deemed Miller “a really necessary and intelligent light.”

He continued: “I'm really glad we met, I'm glad you made music and to all the Mac fans out there, thank you for joining him and being part of his journey.”

The concert raised money for The Mac Miller Circles Fund (MMCF), an organisation which seeks to improve the opportunities for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Miller, whose real name is Malcolm James McCormick, had struggled with substance abuse in the past, most recently facing charges for driving under the influence after a hit-and-run accident. The incident came weeks after his breakup with then-girlfriend of two years, pop star Ariana Grande.

It is unknown whether she attended the memorial concert.

The artist opened up about his drug use and struggles with depression on the 2014 album Faces, which Rolling Stone named one of the top 40 rap albums of the year.

His latest album, Swimming, was released in August, and he was planning to tour again last month. He announced the tour in the last tweet sent from his account, writing: “The show is going to be special every night. I wish it started tomorrow.”
