James Corden has spoken about what fans can expect from the forthcoming Gavin & Stacey Christmas special.

The actor and television presenter announced earlier this year that the BBC comedy series will return this December for a one-off episode.

“We owed it to the characters,” Corden told The Times of revisiting the characters. “Let’s see what they’re doing. We wanted to see if there was something there.”

Corden explained that, for a while, himself and co-writer Ruth Jones feared there was no reason to bring back the show.

“Then, once there was, my feeling was, life’s too short,” he continued. ”Fear is the absolute reason to do it. This sounds ridiculously deep, but none of us are promised tomorrow. We’re here for a minute, so you have to try to do it all. I’d rather regret something than not do it.”

Corden also commented on his rumoured falling-out with Gavin actor Matthew Horne, saying their friendship has “always been great”. He also refrained from commenting on whether the special would pay tribute to Margaret John, who played Doris and died in 2011, as to not spoil anything.

The 40-year-old also spoke about whether Brexit would be a topic of conversation, saying: “We did talk about it. But we just want the new show to be a nostalgic joy-bomb.” He added that Smithy and Stacey would have voted for leave, Gavin and Nessa for remain.

Gavin & Stacey follows Gavin (Horne), from Essex in England, and Stacey (Joanna Page), from Barry in Wales, who fall in love after speaking on the phone every day at work and decide to get married. It also stars Rob Brydon, Larry Lamb, Melanie Waters, and Alison Steadman.

The Christmas special will air on Christmas Day on BBC One.
