Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer

Spider-Man: Far from Home, the latest Marvel blockbuster, has broken a box office milestone held by its predecessor Avengers: Endgame.

Endgame dominated the North American box office upon its release in April, collecting $25.3m (£20.2m) on its first Wednesday in cinemas.

Far from Home surpassed that figure by grossing $27m (£21.6m) in North America on Wednesday, the highest midweek takings of any Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film to date.

Starring Tom Holland as protagonist Peter Parker and Zendaya as his love interest MJ, the superhero blockbuster has so far earned $310m (£248m) worldwide.

According to trade publication Variety, Far from Home is expected to continue its impressive performance this weekend, when it opens in most other international markets.

The film sees Parker take on his superhero responsibilities again when Samuel L. Jackson’s super-spy Nick Fury asks him to step up against a new threat.

But Parker is reluctant as he heads off on a school trip to Europe, where he just wants to enjoy himself and share his feelings to MJ.

Spider-Man: Far from Home is Holland’s second film in the leading role as the superhero. He also made appearances in several Avengers films.

He follows in the footsteps of Andrew Garfield from The Amazing Spider-Man franchise and Tobey Maguire who played the superhero in three films between 2002 and 2007.
