The long-anticipated augmented reality game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will finally launch at the end of this week, its developers have revealed.

Niantic, who also created the hit game Pokemon Go, announced on Twitter that the game will begin rolling out around the world on Friday, 21 June.

“Keep your eyes peeled and wand ready for more information as the game goes live in your region soon,” the tweet stated.

An accompanying trailer gave hints at the type of augmented reality gameplay that players might be able to expect, with flying dementors and trinket-collecting nifflers.

A beta version of the game has previously launched in Australia and New Zealand.

Niantic teased details of the game earlier this year, together with images and clips taken from the game.

“Please resist the urge to panic. Traces of magic are appearing across the Muggle world without warning and in a rather chaotic manner,” the game’s official website stated.

“We worry it is only a matter of time before even the most incurious Muggles catch wind of it. We call on all witches and wizards to help contain the Calamity or risk the worst times since You Know Who. Brush up on your spells, get your wand ready, and enlist immediately.”

Similar to Pokemon Go, the new Harry Potter game will use a player’s phone location to display magical creatures and objects on their screens.

Players will be able to move around the real-world to explore and uncover items in the virtual world overlaid on their smartphones or tablets.

So-called ‘Fortresses’ dotted around the map – similar to ‘Gyms’ in Pokemon Go – will also allow players to interact with others within the game.

“The beloved Harry Potter stories have captured imaginations worldwide for more than 20 years,” Niantic CEO John Hanke said in November 2017 when the game was first announced.

“Soon we’ll turn the fantasy into augmented reality, allowing fans and their friends to become wizards and witches.”
