Vegan alternatives have been sweeping supermarket shelves in recent months, with everything from burgers to sausages undergoing a plant-based makeover, but the latest addition is even more revolutionary.

Tuna mayonnaise is not exactly the first food one thinks of as vegan-friendly, namely because you know from its name that it includes both fish and egg.

But Morrisons is changing that with its fish-free replica of the popular sandwich filling, which is made from soya protein that apparently has a similarly flaky texture to real tuna.

The product, dubbed TUNO, is already available in the US and Australia, but Morrisons is the first UK supermarket to introduce it to its shelves.

There are several different flavours of tuna mayonnaise included in the TUNO range, such as lemon pepper, sesame and ginger and Thai sweet chilli.

With high-protein content and 100 calories or less per serving, it’s bound to be a popular food among health-conscious shoppers.

Robert Wilson, Morrisons tuna buyer commented: “We have listened to so many customers who want an easy alternative to tuna, that’s high in protein and can be used in much the same way.

“TUNO provides a convincing alternative for sandwiches, pasta and salads.”

TUNO is made by Atlantic Natural Foods, a Nashville-based company that produces a number of other plant-based foods, including egg substitutes and vegan ground beef.

“We are committed to sustainability, nutrition, convenience and social responsibility with a focus on delivering taste and value,” reads a statement on the company’s website.
