Buckingham Palace has released three new official photographs of Princess Anne to mark her 70th birthday.

The royal will celebrate her birthday on Saturday 15 August.

The three photographs were taken by John Swannell at Princess Anne’s home in Gatcombe Park in Stroud, Gloucestershire.

They were taken in February, one month before the UK went into lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Each portrait sees the Princess photographed in a different setting and in a different outfit.

In one, she looks into the camera lens and can be seen wearing a deep emerald green dress by Sue Palmer complete with brocade detailing.

The Princess accessorised the look with a gold ribbon knot brooch, which complemented her deep red scarlet lipstick.

In a second photo, Anne wears a flowing tulle ivory gown by Maureen Baker with a matching bolero jacket by Sue Palmer.

The Princess is smiling in the snap, which sees her posing in a chair, and wears the same scarlet lipstick alongside a beaded pearl necklace.

A third landscape photograph shows the Princess posing outdoors beside a tree and looking into the distance.

She wears a more casual outfit, clad in a checked buttoned shirt with a crimson poloneck top.

The Princess completed the look with a pair of charcoal grey trousers.

When asked about birthday celebrations, Princess Anne’s daughter, Zara Tindall revealed that Covid-19 had scuppered their plans.

“We did have plans – it would’ve been up in Scotland – but obviously with Covid and Aberdeen being locked down a bit, I think everything’s been scaled back a little bit,” Tindall said on BBC’s The One Show earlier this week.

“It’s a shame. I’m sure we’ll do something as a family to celebrate her 70 amazing years, she’s just an incredible woman in terms of how much work she can get through in the year,” she continued.

“We will be doing something, as yet I don’t know whether she knows – so my lips are sealed.”

The photographs come after Princess Anne mocked the actor who plays her on the hit Netflix series The Crown.

ITV release documentary to mark Princess Anne's 70th birthday

Speaking in an ITV documentary titled Anne: The Princess Royal At 70, created to mark her 70th birthday, Anne said that while she does not watch the show anymore, she found the early episodes “quite interesting”.

The Princess Royal also commented on the actor who plays her in the series, after discovering that it takes around two hours for her to replicate the royal’s hairstyle.

“Actually I read an article the other day about The Crown, the actress was talking about how long it took them to do their hair like I did,” she said.

“And I’m thinking, ‘How could you possibly take that long?’ I mean it takes me 10 or 15 minutes.”
