Greece has been named the “worst place for women to work” in an annual survey.

Expat Insider is one of the most comprehensive surveys on life abroad and includes data from more than 180,000 expats from around the world.

The survey covers a number of topics affecting people who live abroad, including work life, and based its ranking of the best and worst countries for women to work on more than 8,000 female expats who took part in the study.

According to the index, Greece is the worst place due to the number of female expats who were unhappy with their career prospects, with 81 per cent of respondents expressing negative feelings about the Greek economy.

Italy followed closely behind, with 34 per cent of female expats in the country dissatisfied with their jobs and an additional 50 per cent reporting that they were unhappy with their work-life balance.

Serbia, Argentina, Turkey and Myanmar were also included in the list due to women’s dissatisfaction over working hours, salary and the job opportunities on offer.

Topping the list of best places for women to work abroad is Czech Republic, with 83 per cent of female expats revealing they were satisfied with their professions.

This was followed by Bahrain, Taiwan, Norway and Denmark, all of which boasted high numbers of women happy with their career prospects, work-life balance and job security.

Neither the UK nor the US appeared in either list. In fact, a recent survey by human resource firm Investors in People found that one in four British workers are unhappy in their current jobs.

Speaking to Forbes, Kathrin Chudoba, head of the content and communications department at InterNations, the company that conducted the survey, said that Norway, Denmark, Luxembourg and New Zealand are consistently rated highly among female expats.

"These places have ranked among the top 10 countries for women to work abroad for four years in a row.

“Female expats’ satisfaction with their work-life balance, working hours and job security is above average in these countries.”
