David Beckham speaks about new Inter Miami crest

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has revealed he wants to end his professional career in the United States, adding that he would jump at the chance to join David Beckham’s new MLS expansion team Inter Miami if the former England captain shows an interest in signing him.

Griezmann shunned interest from Barcelona to sign a new contract with Atletico in June that keeps him at the club until the summer of 2023, announcing his decision via the medium of a controversial TV documentary that followed him through the end of the 2017-18 season.

The idea for the programme was widely believed to have been inspired by the ESPN special, titled ‘The Decision’, in which basketball superstar LeBron James announced he was leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat as a free agent in 2010.

And in an interview with French newspaper L’Equipe, Griezmann explained that his desire to play in the US is partly motivated by his affection for the country’s “show culture”.

“If Beckham wants me in his club, then I'll go,” Griezmann said. “I want to finish my career in the US. I don't know yet if it's going to be in Miami or Los Angeles.

“They are two great cities. I like the mentality and the show culture of the US.”

Earlier this week Beckham announced the name of his new team would be Club Internacional de Futbol Miami, shortened to Inter Miami, and unveiled the club’s pink and black crest.

Commenting on the announcement, Beckham – who serves as both the franchise’s owner and president of football operations – said in a statement: “This is such a proud day for myself and for the entire team.

“It’s an honour to announce the new name and crest to our fans – we are taking another important step in establishing our club and today marks an important moment in the history of Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami.

“Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami is a name that celebrates the incredible energy of one of the most exciting cities in the world - one that is diverse, passionate and ambitious - a city that has welcomed me and so many others so warmly.

“Our club will be a home for all – no matter where you are from or how you got here. This is just the beginning of our journey as we continue to build towards our first game in 2020.”

Inter Miami will begin playing in MLS in the 2020 season when Griezmann will be 29 years old, meaning it could be several years before his desired move to MLS becomes a realistic possibility.
