Wayne Rooney returns to England squad: former England captain speaks ahead of Wembley farewell against US

Wayne Rooney will wear the No10 shirt, be given the captain’s armband and be awarded a guard of honour when he comes on for tomorrow’s Wayne Rooney Foundation International at Wembley.

Rooney will say farewell to the England set-up in tomorrow’s game against the United States, and will come on at some point in the second half for his final international appearance. He retired from England duty 18 months ago as England’s record goalscorer, with 53 international goals.

Speaking about the players’ plans at his press conference at Wembley Stadium this afternoon, Southgate confirmed that the players have decided that Rooney will wear his traditional No10 shirt, even though he will start on the bench. Southgate said that it was important for the England team to “do things their own way” and “show respect for the former players”, as part of their focus on ‘legacy’, and passing the shirt on to the next generation.

Fabian Delph will be the starting captain but he confirmed that he will hand the armband over to Rooney when he comes on. He spoke warmly of how Rooney “welcomed” him when he first came into the England setup.
