Play of the Week: This Is My Family
Crucible Studio Theatre, Sheffield
The subject of an unsuccessful family holiday seems lacking in grandeur for a team-up between playwright/composer Tim Firth and director Daniel Evans, but their Sondheim-esque study of midlife crisis and teenage angst is unashamedly feelgood, sentimental and very funny.
Thirteen-year-old Nicky (Evelyn Hoskins) leads her family on a camping trip to the site where her parents’ teenage love was declared. Aunty Sian (Rachel Lumberg) delivers much of the comic muscle, but the entire cast is spectacularly good, bringing actorly gravity to their parts while skilfully squeezing the laughs out of the libretto.
