His photographs, which include an Oxford student drinking from a champagne bottle, the coffin of Margaret Thatcher at her funeral and Chris Huhne arriving at Southwark Crown Court, won him the title of SABMiller Photographer of the Year.

The Reuters photographer’s work emerged ahead of other outstanding examples from the world of news, business, sports and fashion and entertainment.

The entries, from over 400 press photographers across the country, were judged by a panel of picture editors from national, regional and international newspapers, as well as photographic agencies.

Alan Sparrow, chairman of the UK Picture Editors’ Guild Chairman, said: “This year’s entries produced some of the closest scoring amongst our judges, but a clear winner emerged early. I think that the work of Stefan Wermuth makes him an outstanding SABMiller Photographer of the Year.”

The winning photographs will be displayed at an exhibition at the Museum of London between 6 November - 16 March and a book containing the images will be published.
