Taylor Wessing Prize 2014: David Titlow's picture of his baby son takes the accolade

The fashion photographer took the picture after a midsummer party in Sweden

Fashion photographer David Titlow has won the Taylor Wessing Prize for a picture taken of his baby son.

Titlow, whose work has appeared in Vanity Fair, Esquire and The Guardian, was awarded the prestigious £12,000 prize for the picture taken the morning after a midsummer party in Sweden.

The photographer, who previously dated Alexa Chung, described the “perfect” moment that compelled him to take the image.

“Everyone was a bit hazy from the previous day’s excess. My girlfriend passed our son to the subdued revellers on the sofa – the composition and back light was so perfect that I had to capture the moment,” he said.

The judges picked Titlow’s winning picture from more than 4,000 works submitted by 1,793 photographers.

Sandy Nairne, director of the gallery, said: “I congratulate David Titlow on making such a fascinating and compelling image which wins the Taylor WessingPortrait Prize 2014. And I offer my thanks to all the many photographers who submitted this year, allowing the judges to choose such a strong exhibition.”

A picture of a skate boarder Afghani girl taken by Jessica Fulford-Dobson won second prize, while a portrait of nine-year-old Estonian twins taken by Birgit Püve was awarded third prize.

The photographs will go on show at the National Portrait Gallery in London until 22 February.
