We think always of the worlds of film, television, and gaming as this far-off, fantastical entity; a dream-space always beyond our reach.

An artistic collective named '2D Among Us', based in Russia, has been creating a fascinating collection of photographs; taking fictionalised characters and photoshopping them into photographs of their own local surroundings.

In this world, the Eye of Sauron looms over Russian cityscapes, Game of Thrones' Jon Snow is lost in the urban streets, and Sonic the Hedgehog's gold rings lead down housing development paths.

It's a tremendously beautiful collection of works, with many available on the group's Instagram page.

Beyond pure wish fulfilment, the photographs speak to the Russian landscape in its extremes: in both the breathtaking beauty of its sunsets or vast woodlands, to urban sprawls left vacant or decaying.

The project also incorporates famous artworks, placed into these contemporary settings; bringing Vincent Van Gogh's iconic The Starry Night to a city view, for example.

You can view more pieces on the group's community page here.
