Now in her eighties, Munro has long been hailed as one of the most accomplished short-story writers of her generation.

This latest collection is well worth reading if just for the last four entries: "I believe they are the first and last — and the closest – things I have to say about my own life."

The narrator shares memories of a childhood in small town Canada and her dogged attempts to re-invent herself away from her family.

"We say of some things that they can't be forgiven, or that we will never forgive ourselves. But we do – we do it all the time."
