Based on a Chilean protest song written a few months before Pinochet's overthrow of Salvador Allende, Frederic Rzewski's 1975 piano piece "The People United Will Never Be Defeated" is the result of the composer's search for "a form in which all existing musical languages could be brought together". Skillfully negotiated by Kai Schumacher, its 36 variations are presented over an hour in six sets tracking the music's development – a journey taking in a spectrum of stylistic modes.
