Cinematographers are often grossly overlooked when it comes to films, overshadowed by famous leading actors, their important work unfairly taken for granted.

Millions of us follow celebrities on Instagram, keeping up with Kim Kardashian’s every move, but neglect to check out the likes of six-time Oscar nominee Emmanuel ‘Chivo’ Lubezki, who has also been quietly posting on the social network.

Recently, Chivo has been uploading a series called ‘Faces of R’ showing close-up portraits of actors in upcoming movie The Revenant. He shot the film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and set in the Canadian wilderness, using only natural light and is the hot bet to win the Best Cinematography gong for the third year running at the 2016 Oscars.

It’s time to find out what you’re missing. Below is a small section of some of Chivo’s photos: some taken on the sets of Birdman, Gravity, The Tree of Life, A Little Princess and his other acclaimed movies, others more personal, all of them staggeringly beautiful.

But what about the many other directors of photography behind some of our favourite films? From Benoit Delhomme (The Theory of Everything) to Reed Morano (Kill Your Darlings) and Wally Pfister (Inception) to Phedon Papamichael (Nebraska), here is a sample of photos from the host of cinematographers on Instagram.
