Small as it is, vibrant programming, a lovely setting and engaged films lend this Lake District festival its distinct flavour.

Senses is one of the themes this year, with celebrations of sound including the hearty indie-pop biopic Good Vibrations (above) and Benjamin Britten docu-drama Peace and Conflict; meanwhile, docu-dazzlers Chasing Ice and Nostalgia for the Light will pleasure the peepers.

Education is the other theme, with Sweden's Evil and Germany's The Wave kicking open the classroom doors. A global sweep of films concludes with Ray Winstone taking to the road in the Alzheimer's drama Ashes, while guests include patron John Hurt.
