Last week, at the opening night of Old Times, Kristin Scott Thomas stated that she “hates doing films” and would always prefer the stage to the film set.

Will she feel the same when she has a new movie to promote next month?

Dans la Maison [In the House], out on 29 March, is Scott Thomas’ latest French-speaking role. She plays the severe-looking gallerist wife of a teacher (Fabrice Luchini) whose life is turned upside down when he becomes obsessed with a pupil’s  creative writing assignment.

Directed by Francois Ozon (Potiche; 8 Women) it is a by turns creepy, compelling and comic meditation on teaching and narrative.

But what did Ozon, who has previously directed the British actress Charlotte Rampling in Swimming Pool think of Scott Thomas’ Francophone efforts? “She’s a very Anglo-Saxon actress. She can speak French with no accent, but I encouraged her to keep it. I like her little errors in French, they’re charming!”
