International box office: 'Chronicles of Narnia' topples 'Deathly Hallows'

Outside the US, the box office around the world did a brisk business with The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which sailed out in front at number one.

The third installment of the family fantasy adventure opened in 3D across 56 territories, reaching the top spot in 32 of them and making a strong $67 million. By comparison, in the US, where Narnia also took the top spot, the film only made $24.5 million, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Based on the C.S. Lewis novel, the Chronicles of Narnia threequel was released last weekend in Australia, where the film was shot. Next, the film opens in Germany, then the Scandinavian countries for Christmas weekend.

After three weeks at the top of the box office, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 moves to second place. The seventh installment in the franchise is playing in 64 territories, opening in South Korea and Hong Kong this week.

In third was the animated Tangled in 3D. The interpretation of the Rapunzel tale was number one in Germany, Austria and Italy. It continues to rolls out in Australia, Greece, Brazil, the UK, and more countries in January.

In fourth place is another animated film in 3D, Megamind, voiced by Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt and Tina Fey. Four new markets joined the 32 countries playing the comedy-fantasy, including Australia, where it hit the top spot.

In fifth was The Tourist, costarring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, which opened in 15 countries. The thriller, directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck ( The Lives of Others), took first place in Taiwan, second place in Korea, and third place in the UK. It came in second place in North America.
