23 Jump Street: Men In Black crossover and female-led reboots happening just to mock Hollywood

Hopefully they'll throw in a superhero or two as well

The Jump Street franchise might have started out as a fairly by-the-numbers bro comedy, but it's slowly morphing into a quite wonderful satire of the modern studio system in the film industry.

Sony Pictures has confirmed that a female-driven spin-off is being put together by Broad City writers Lucia Aniello and Paul Downs, with 21 and 22 Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller returning to steer both this and a willfully absurd crossover with Men In Black.

The two films are clearly taking aim at recent unimaginative Hollywood commissions, including Ghostbusters' female-centric reboot and the increasing hybridisation of all the comic book movies e.g. Superman v Batman, and I love that they're going to the length of creating actual multi-million dollar feature films just to make this joke.

The last film, 22 Jump Street, strayed into self-parody seemingly because the creators couldn't believe the original was actually being franchised out, mocking the concept of sequels and frequently breaking the fourth wall.

It is not yet known whether Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones or Josh Brolin will return for the Men In Black crossover, though it's possible Dakota Johnson will be involved with the female-led spin-off having appeared in the original film, while Aniello and Downs may well hire some of the Broad City cast.

The two films have been announced before the projects they are parodying have even trailered fully, perhaps already becoming something of a thorn in their sides.
