Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman: 'The tone will grittier than in Ant-Man'

'I feel like we’ll end up in a place that I’ve always wanted to be when I look at superhero movies'

So far, the majority of films in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe have been rather lighthearted, swapping the darkness of The Dark Knight for regular quips from Iron Man.

That’s not to say the MCU is purely fun and games; Winter Solder, Civil War, and Age of Ultron developed the franchise’s grittier side. Of course, the Whedon-esque one-liners still feature, but the mood is decidedly darker than in Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man.

Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman has since clarified the tone of his solo film, telling CBR the upcoming film will be one of the grittier entries in the MCU.

“It’s funny, because on one hand, the Marvel movies that I’ve liked the most are the ones that are funny,” he told the publication.

“I love Ant-Man. But for me, most of the time the darker superhero movies are the ones that I gravitate towards, that I love the most. So I’m glad that I’m not in an Ant-Man. I’m glad that the tone of [Black Panther] may be a little grittier.

“I just wanted to establish that from the beginning, that that’s what we were doing. That that’s what I intend to do. I feel like we’ll end up in a place that I’ve always wanted to be when I look at superhero movies. Those are the ones I like the most. It’s exciting to do that.”

Fingers crossed director Ryan Coogler can translate the ‘grittier’ comics to the big screen without too much Disneyfication.

Recently, Black Panther screenwriter Joe Robert Cole spoke candidly about the upcoming film, revealing that the film will take place directly after Civil War.
