Whilst there have been numerous incarnations of Spider-Man in recent years - he has been played by both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in the last decade - it’s Tom Holland’s version that has the internet going bonkers at the moment.

If you’re one of those people slightly worried that the new CGI-enhanced suit could ruin things a little, then Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is here to calm those nerves.

The Marvel director - who has previously praised the upcoming Captain America: Civil War on social media - took to his Twitter account to assure fans that Holland’s version of the webslinger is the real deal.

“I think Tom Holland is the best Spidey/Peter Parker ever by a country mile,” he wrote. “It’s his own thing. He is to Spidey as Downey is to Iron Man, Ledger was to the Joker, Pratt is to Star-Lord.”

To highlight that he is apparently not biased just because Marvel are his employer, he Tweeted out that he is not obliged to say a Marvel film is good, even if he thought it was bad: “If I don’t like a Marvel movie (or any modern movie) I just say nothing.”

How Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield feel about Holland’s performance is unknown, but at least Garfield is glad to be out of the red and blue spandex.
