Colin Firth and Mike Leigh films up for movie awards

Royal drama The King's Speech and Mike Leigh film Another Year have clinched yet more nominations at the latest movie awards.

Both are up for seven gongs, with Colin Firth nominated for best actor for his role as stuttering royal King George VI in The King's Speech.

The film, which is being tipped for Oscar success, is also up for best film and best British actress for Helena Bonham Carter.

It also has nominations for British film, British actor (Firth), British director (Tom Hooper) and screenwriter.

Nominations for ensemble drama Another Year include best British director (Mike Leigh), British film, British actor (Jim Broadbent), and British actress (Lesley Manville and Ruth Sheen).

The Social Network, about the founding of Facebook, has five nominations, including best film, while The Arbor, the debut feature from British director Clio Barnard about the late Bradford playwright Andrea Dunbar, and the Coen brothers' True Grit, each have four.

Firth will be competing for the best actor award with Jeff Bridges (True Grit), Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine) and Edgar Ramirez (Carlos).

Black Swan star Natalie Portman is up for best actress alongside Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right), Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone), Noomi Rapace (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) and Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit).

London Film Critics' Circle Chairman Jason Solomons said: "The critics have been bowled over by the variety and excellence of the nominees this year, from old favourites on top form, such as Mike Leigh, to stupendous debuts such as Clio Barnard's The Arbor.

The 31st London Critics' Circle Film Awards, voted for by UK film critics, broadcasters and writers, take place on February 10 at BFI Southbank.
